An encoder is a sensor that detects rotational movement and converts it into electrical pulses to determine the relative position, speed, and direction of rotation. Unlike an absolute encoder, an incremental encoder does not know its absolute position when powered on; it requires initialization using a reference point (zero pulse). Typical applications include position and speed measurement in automation systems.
